Banff, Canada - Johnston's Canyon Hike 8/4/22



Itinerary:

9 am - Hike to Lower Falls

Hike to Uppper Falls

Hike back


Directions: Johnston's Canyon parking lot, Icefield Parkway, Banff, Canada

Getting to Johnston's Canyon - Drive - park in Johnston's Canyon parking lot (free and there is a

dirt parking lot to the west of the main one for overflow.

Gets busy after 930 am.

Activity:

Hiking Johnston's Canyon - 3.2 mi total out and back. Leaves parking lot to the north under large wooden arch, crosses bridge and heads to the right. 0.75 mi Paved trail to the lower falls. Metal walkways in the gorge overlooking powder blue/green water and countless waterfalls. GET TO LOWER FALLS BEFORE 10 am!!! There is a bridge and a small tunnel to the lower falls viewpoint which causes a severe bottleneck and long lines. Lower falls is about a 30 ft waterfall into a small alcove. Continue 0.8 mi to upper falls. Trail is more steep and dirt. Waterfall is about 130 feet with an overlooking platform. Dogs allowed. Can hike/snowshoe year-round. Trip Report


Gear: T-shirt, long sleeve fleece, light waterproof jacket, hiking pants/shorts, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camelback or regular back pack, 1-2 Liters water, 3-4 snacks, hiking shoes/boots.
