Snowshoeing - Granite Flats, American Fk Cyn 2/1/25

Sample Itinerary:  

7 am - Carpooling

8 am - Hike up to Granite Flats Campground (1 mile)

8:30 am - Hike up Dry Creek/Deer Creek Trail to Silver Lake Rd (1/4 mile)

10 am - Sled down Silver Lake road (1 3/4 mile)

11 am -Back to parking lot


Drive:  Tibble Fork Parking Area, American Fk Cyn


Cost: $6 day use fee (FREE if you have a parks pass - put on dashboard; cash - there is a fee booth at the east bathrooms in the Tibble Fk parking lot; online - pay ahead of time "www.yourpassnow.com" and write the number from your email on a greed tag and place on your dashboard)


Activity:

Hike/Snowshoe Granite Flats - 3.3 miles. Start up trail to Granite Flats Campground, about 500 ft on rt is the trailhead for Dry Fk/Deer Creek Cyn Trail. Take this up through the woods staying to the middle generally, then to the rt if the trail forks. This trail should meet up with the Silver Lake road. You turn rt on the road and head back down canyon. There is a trail 237, that goes above the road on the left which is what we preferred on the way down. Route

Sledding - sled down the main Silver Lake Road back to Tibble Fk parking lot

Tip - Longer sleds, especially the Costco type, work best. Small disks don’t work very well, but foam with a vinyl base works well.


Gear: Snowshoes/poles (weather dependent), gaiters (optional - can rent), (NO COTTON) thermal top and bottom, wool socks or just not cotton socks, snow pants, long sleeve fleece, light waterproof jacket, gloves, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camelback or regular back pack (with space remaining to shove clothes in when you get too warm), 1 Liters water, 3-4 snacks, WATERPROOF boots or non-waterproof boots/shoes and also rent "overshoes", sled.

Poles: $4 (Out N Back); $5 (BYU Outdoors Unltd)

Gaiters (cover ankles from getting snow): $3 (BYU Outdoors Unlt)
